FAQs

Are all psychologists the same?

The pathways to being registered as a psychologist in Australia are varied. These can range from five years of training to beyond eight years of training. Therefore, not all psychologists are permitted to deliver therapy under Medicare. Clinical Psychologists have additional specialized training and are endorsed by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency. This means they are trained to deliver therapy for the range of psychological conditions faced by the public. Medicare recognizes this specialization and permits a higher rebate for seeing such a specialist.

How does a Medicare rebate work?

In Australia, your doctor will write a referral and complete a Mental Health Plan on your behalf. Once this is in place, you are permitted to see a psychologist for an initial 6 sessions followed by a further 4 sessions. This is an annual number of 10 sessions per calendar year. As a result, you are automatically rebated by Medicare the amount of $141.85 of the amount associated with seeing a Clinical Psychologist .
