Meditate To Improve Mental Health
Just Get Started.
Meditation is the practice of being present. In a world of competing demands and expectations, this is not easy to do.
Begin with the best place. Ideally this will be a spot where you wont be interrupted. Consider the comfort of your room, the sanctuary of a garden, or quiet place at work.
Now, get comfortable. This can be done lying down or sitting up and may depend on where you are meditating. If you are sitting up, make sure you are comfortable and well supported. Close your eyes and slowly bring your attention to your breath. The immediate experience of your breath, how ever it is and how ever it changes.
Our minds will wander. If this occurs, gently bring your focus back to your breath. You will find the noisy thoughts will disappear.
Like any form of conditioning, it’s important to start small. You wouldn’t go to the heaviest weight in a gym or train for the longest time span if you’re starting out. Similarly start with a minute or two. You can gradually increase the time as you get more familiar with the meditation experience. Remember, starting small will set you up to build and benefit.
